Volcanic Peppers LAVA Green Vulcan Hot Sauce review

The newest hot sauce to come from the mind of Tim Bader and Volcanic Peppers is LAVA Green Vulcan Hot Sauce.

Continuing his line of LAVA sauces, which include Raspberry Scorpion Hot Sauce, Chocolate Lightening Hot Sauce, and LAVA BBQ Sauces (Spicy and Hot Scorpion), Tim has crafted this “green” jalapeño based sauce that is bursting with flavor.

Green Vulcan is a flavor filled mild to medium sauce that is sure to please those looking for a lot of flavor and just a touch of heat… goes great on salads, tacos, in burritos or enchiladas… [it’s] also an exceptional salsa enhancer – just mix it in and taste the difference.

Ingredients: jalapeño, vinegar, water, sugar, onion, salt, ancho, carrot powder and spices.

Tim handed me a bottle of Green Vulcan in its prototype form at the NYC Hot Sauce Expo. While the flavor was outstanding, it was quite thick and a bit “sharp” tasting. Now that I have the finished product, I have to say how much he’s improved it. The flavor is there, the heat is a nice mild level, and the sauce is a bit thinner (a good thing in this case).

I love that he used some ancho chile to bring out just a hint of smokiness, and the carrot powder is a nice surprise – you don’t see THAT ingredient everyday, and I think this combo really helps make this sauce unique among the jalapeño sauces out there.

After sampling the sauces straight up (I had to compare the prototype to the finished sauce), pizza was the next step.

Pizza just may be the sauce reviewers crutch – and not everything goes well on pizza, but it’s a start. And if you like green sauces or jalapeño sauces on your pizza, Green Vulcan will make you happy.

Next up, tacos of course.

Now the Vulcan is really starting to shine. (I’ve already become so familiar with the Green Vulcan, I can just call it Vulcan). I still prefer a red sauce on my tacos and burritos, but this was a taste test and so I sacrifice. Seriously though, the Green Vulcan is delicious on tacos.

Finally, some nachos.

Ding! Winner! Pour the Green Vulcan over some nice, toasty chips, along with seasoned taco meat (our own taco seasoning recipe of course) and some melty cheese, and THIS my friends is just what LAVA Green Vulcan Hot Sauce is made for. IMO.

Texture & Appearance: Rated 4 out of 5 Stars – Pours nicely, great texture and color. I’m puzzled by the residual liquid, which looks like an oil, but must be from the chiles themselves blended with some onion juices and vinegar.

Taste Straight Up: Rated 5 out of 5 Stars – A big fresh hit of quality jalapeño peppers along with a nice vinegar flavor hits you first, with a nice sweetness from the sugar and onions as a supporting taste. Rounding out a really full mouth experience is the carrot powder and spices. Truly a world class jalapeño sauce.

Heat Level: Rated 1.5 out of 5 Stars – Mild to just under medium-mild in heat, this sauce is a great starter for the budding chilehead, as well as one to win over the whole family with.

Overall Rating (Taste on Food, Final Thoughts): Rated 5 out of 5 Stars – Our highest rating, for the overall quality, taste and flavors and appearance. A remarkably good jalapeño sauce.

Be sure to visit Volcanic Peppers to get yourself a few bottles of this tasty new jalapeño sauce, and tell Tim that HotSauceDaily sent you.

  1. This has a really fresh flavor, but I’d have to go with 2.5 stars on the heat level right out of the bottle, backed up to 2 stars when added to something like a cheese omelette. This would be a great addition to chicken enchiladas too!
