Pork in the Park 2012 Day 2 Competition Day Wrap-up
We started our 2nd day at Pork in the Park by going directly to the competition area. We arrived shortly after the last turn-in, and a lot of the teams were already beginning to tear down their sites. Most teams want to be ready to roll out after the late day awards are given out.
We did get to chat briefly with Mike Richter of Chix, Swine and Bovine and Chris Capell of Dizzy Pig. “Famous Dave” Anderson was a real hoot to meet and chat with. We also talked to DJ Watkins of U Needa BBQ, Jay Reeder of 4:20 Q who won Grand Champion as well as Maryland Champion later that day.

BBQ Pitmasters, the show, was there filming their latest episode. At this time we are sworn to secrecy about the show and contestants – suffice it to say a friend of ours was on board, waving to us from their “sequestered area” from afar. The Pitmaster judges, Tuffy Stone, Myron Mixon and Aaron Franklin were milling about, talking to some onlookers.
Captain Thom joined us to walk around and support the Mid Atlantic Barbecue Association members George Hensler of Who Are Those Guys and 3Eyz BBQ among others.
Brian interviewed two new teams at their first competition – Taste O South and Rex’s Red Hot BBQ. Stay tuned for that audio on the HotSauceWeekly.com podcast.
Before we left, we stopped by the Jacked Up BBQ food booth for some “pig candy” – bacon, smoked with rub. Wow, yea, we’ll be making some of that at home real soon!

Day 3, Sunday was a washout – with heavy rain all day, we did not attend. Although the “Backyard Competition” did happen, we’ll post some results here when we learn of them.
Sounds like a very eventful contest especially with the taping going on.
