Luxardo Original Maraschino Cherries

And now, from the That’s Not Hot Sauce department… we bring you a short review of the Original Maraschino Cherries from Luxardo in Italy.

Luxardo maraschino cherries are sour marasca cherries that are candied and steeped in syrup made of cherry juice and sugar. Their firm texture and thick rich syrup make them ideal for use as a cocktail garnish, for topping ice cream sundaes, and for use in baking.

Luxardo Original Maraschino Cherries – Are they worth the extra expense?

Luxardo Maraschino Cherries from Italy

Original Maraschino Cherries are made by the Luxardo family, who exclusively cultivate over 30,000 Marasca cherry trees in the Veneto region of Italy. This product is all natural, with no coloring or thickening agents added, and are certified kosher. Each container contains about 50% cherries, and 50% syrup by volume.

Ingredients: marasca cherries, sugar, marasca cherry juice, glucose, citric acid, natural color, maraschino flavor.

We purchased a bottle of these candied marashino cherries from DiPasquale’s Italian Marketplace in Baltimore Maryland. And at $19.99 for the jar I thought these better be good!

After sampling a few, I told Marilyn how delicious they were, but I wasn’t sure about the $20 price.

A few searches later, and low and behold, on Amazon they are priced at that point and even higher. Apparently, these babies are worth their weight in gold!

I love them in my homemade Orange Crush (vodka, OJ, splash of Sprite, maraschino juice and cherries). Just for fun, here’s a pic of my Pineapple Crush I had recently. Recipe is at the end of this post.

Pineapple Crush Cocktail

These definitely rock in a Manhatten or a Jack and Coke for a little sweet kick!

Throw a few of these delicious cherries on top of your favorite ice cream desert, and you will thank me. They are amazing.

And they really are worth the extra bucks. The best deal I found was for 2 jars (400g. / 14.11oz each) at $33.97 with free shipping. Here’s our affiliate link:

Buy Luxardo Original Marashino Cherries

Pineapple Crush recipe:

– 4 oz pineapple juice
– 2 oz vodka
– splash of Sprite
– drizzle of Maraschino juice
– garnish with Luxardo Original Maraschino Cherries

I’ve already ordered two more jars. Yum!

I’d love to know if you’ve tried these candied goodies, and what you think of them. Just leave a Comment below.

710 Dat’s My Sauce Datil Pepper Sauce Review

Unique to St. Augustine, Florida, the Datil pepper is both sweet and spicy and can range from medium hot to fairly hot. A quick Google search turns up less than a dozen Datil sauces, so it’s both unique and rare, as hot sauces go.

710-datil-sauce-texture

710 Dat’s My Sauce Datil Pepper Sauce

710 Dat’s My Sauce Datil Pepper Sauce is made with the famous Datil Pepper and they nail it!

A Southern family recipe that’s been passed down for generations, 710 Dat’s My Sauce is an original Datil pepper sauce made with locally grown ingredients. Packed with a unique sweet heat, it’s good on just about anything!

Ingredients: ketchup (tomato concentrate, distilled vinegar, high fructose corn syrup, salt, spice, onion powder), onions, red wine vinegar (red wine vinegar, sulfites added), sugar, hot datil peppers, bell peppers, brown sugar, (sugar, cane syrups), fresh garlic, salt & spices

710 Datil Sauce texture closeup

Texture and Appearance

Texture & Appearance: Bright red in color, this very shiny sauce is medium thick and quite pulpy. Very nice mouth feel. Beautiful.

Taste Straight Up: Very sweet followed by a nice mild vinegar hit, onions, garlic and spices are up next with a slow finish of heat. Delicious.

710 Datil Sauce on tacos

710 Datil Sauce on tacos

Taste on Food: Perfect on tacos or burritos. Datil pepper sauces are some of my favorite hot sauces for tacos. 710 Dat’s My Sauce is a huge winner here. Perfect.

710 Datil Sauce on Cream Cheese and Crackers

710 Datil Sauce on Cream Cheese and Crackers

We tried it poured onto simple cream cheese and crackers – just a few drops for those bites made a nice appetizer.

710 Datil Pepper Sauce on Mexican Hot Dogs

Heat Level: The label says “Hot” – I would rate it a 2.5 out of 5. If I had a 2.75 graphic I’d go that far. The heat comes on slow and reaches a peak that doesn’t last too long. The burn is quick and flavorful. Unique.

Graphics/Packaging: The nice big 8 ounce bottle is a plus, as it has a generous opening.

A label doesn’t get much simpler than this. But you know exactly what’s in the bottle – especially if you are looking for a Datil sauce.

I’m ok with the 3 color label, but I was curious about the design. Not having been to Florida since I was 15, I was clueless.

Do you know what the label design is based on? Listen to the short interview with Mr 710 himself, Bruce Peterson, at the bottom of this post to find out.

Final Thoughts

710 Datil Pepper Sauce review underway

710 Datil Pepper Sauce review underway

Heat Level: Rated 2.5 out of 5 Stars – As I said, I’d go to 2.75 on the heat, but we have no graphic for that. But then again, it’s me just trying to push the heat level rating just a tad past the middle. Medium hot.

Overall Rating: Rated 5 out of 5 Stars – This fantastic sauce gets our highest rating for its flavor and great packaging. Stellar.

I’m a sucker for a good Datil pepper sauce, and this one does not disappoint. I’m placing it in my top 3 Datil sauces. One of which I’ve not formally reviewed yet. 🙂

Visit http://710datsmysauce.com/ to buy a couple of bottles (yes, get a few… it’s so good that it will go fast) and for more information about this delicious sauce and the history and people behind it.

They also have a nice recipe page that you can check out, and please tell them HotSauceDaily.com sent you!

Here’s my 8 minute interview with Bruce Peterson of 710 Dat’s My Sauce Datil Pepper Sauce. Enjoy!

So here, in alphabetical order, are our favorite 13 products from 2013. Read through to the end to see our Favorite Product of the Year!

Carolina Cologne BBQ Sauce

Amazingly delicious BBQ sauce. Really brought home a nice blend of NC style vinegar and red pepper simplicity with a tomato based BBQ sauce. Superb and a must try. Great on wings too! Savory.

Deception Salsa

A good line-up of salsas that really set the bar high for flavors, heat levels, and quality. With 6 salsas available for purchase, we reviewed 2 of them in 2013 – Tease and Entice. Great.

Dirty Dick’s Hot Pepper Sauce

Dirty Dicks Hot Pepper Sauce is not like any other Caribbean style sauce we’ve ever had. Yet it brings on the heat, fruit, sweet and spice of the Islands. This stuff is different!

Eagle Wingz Chesapeake Style

Classic Buffalo style wing sauce with a hint of Chesapeake Seasoning. Local guys make good! Think Old Bay Seasoning® meets Buffalo style wings. Winner.

Ed’s Roadhouse Sriracha Jerky

“…within 2 bites we were blown away. After 4 bites, we were ready to just eat the whole package.” Probably the single best jerky we’ve ever had! Two words – Awe some!

Frankie V’s Salsa

Also gets a nod from us for great texture and flavor with their Serrano and Habanero salsas. The short, fat jars are great for dipping. Superb!

Hell Flakes from Todd Wilbur’s Top Secret Recipes

Now our go-to pepper flakes shaker for pizza and pasta. Fresh and fiery.

Kramer’s BBQ Sauce

Sweet, savory, and zesty! Delicious. Bonus! Still packed in a Beer Bottle with stopper. (You won’t need that stopper… it’s that good). Perfection.

Old Florida Style Datil Pepper BBQ Rub Wings

P1080935

Here is surprise #1. We’ve not posted a review yet. But we deep fried some wings, and then tossed them in the Datil Pepper BBQ Rub and found the overall taste and visual appeal just spectacular. We’re big fans of the Datil pepper anyway, and this rub was simply amazing! BBQ candy. (Will update here when the review is posted – this just may make our Week of Wings V in 2014). Visit http://madjohnsfood.com for details.

SAAS Onion and Garlic Hot Sauce

One of the most interesting hot sauces we had in 2013, SAAS Onion and Garlic is delicious. Unique.

Sakaja Wild Wheeland Pepper Sauce

This sweet island style sauce is simply the best “island style” sauce we’ve had ever. Wonderful.

Slavo Salt Gourmet Seasoning

A nice blend of garlic, Kosher salt and pepper. Sounds simple, right? It is. And in its simplicity lies its flavor. Our new favorite steak seasoning by far! Gourmet.

Wy’s Wings Asian Ambrosia Wings

One of the few times our top rating of 5 stars was not enough. Asian Ambrosia wing sauce from Wy’s deserved a 6! Amazing!

HotSauceDaily’s Top Favorite Product of 2013

Surprise #2. It’s a tie! After a very scientific process (a lot of bickering), Marilyn and I could not agree on just one. I won’t say who picked which, but both are worthy to be named our Favorite Product of the Year for 2013.

Chili Dan’s All Purpose Start to Finish Sauce

Peppery, spicy, sweet and simply a great all purpose sauce, Chili Dan’s was a winner on chicken and pork, and as a delicious sweet dipping sauce. Perfect when glazed onto some baby-back ribs. And deep fried wings tossed in Chili Dan’s were a huge favorite too.

http://hotsaucedaily.com/chili-dans-all-purpose-start-to-finish-sauce/

This is a sauce we plan to have on hand at all times. Extremely good.

Crazy Good Green Chile Dust

Crazy Good Green Chile Dust embodies the earthy New Mexican chile flavor that is so popular in the Southwest region of the US. This dust (or dried green chile powder) gave us some delicious chicken enchiladas, as well as a nice coating onto some corn tortilla shells for tacos.

The quality of flavor and freshness just blew us away. Another “must have” spice on hand at all times. Mandatory.
