It’s a cool Sunday morning in November as I write this review, and I’m enjoying my 2nd Crazy Mary Bloody Mary. The fresh taste and citrus smell give way to a spicy and flavorful beverage, but  I think I’ll stick to Fireball Whiskey when I decide to have a great night.

Ingredients: Tomato puree (water, tomato paste), Worcestershire Sauce (distilled white vinegar, molasses, water, sugar, onions, anchovies, salt, garlic, cloves, tamarind extract, natural flavorings, chile pepper extract), prepared horseradish (horseradish, distilled vinegar, water, soybean oil, salt), apple cider vinegar, olive brine (water, salt, olive solids, lactic acid), fire roasted red bell peppers, green chile dust (New Mexican green chile powder, sea salt, spices), salt, fresh lemon juice, black pepper, fresh garlic, Worcestershire powder (brown sugar, onion, maltodextrin, modified corn starch, spices, malted barley, flour, garlic, vinegar solids, tamarind extract), xanthan gum.

Texture: It’s hard to see in our pics, but Crazy Mary is not too thin, and not too thick. A beautiful “sauce” to look at, with pieces of fresh garlic and horseradish that provide some very chewy bits to play with in your mouth.

Crazy Mary is thin enough to make a great Bloody Mary, and thick enough to drink straight up as a tomato cocktail sans alcohol. Remarkable.

Taste: Like any good recipe, the many flavors in this mixer are uniquely identifiable and yet married into one big tasting extravaganza.

Crazy Mary smells spicy and very different from other mixers. Right away notes of citrus and of horseradish hit the nose. The smell of Worcestershire is strong but muted in the flavors. In other words, the Worcestershire sauce is not overbearing.
The light tomato flavor balances well with the spices and seasonings.

Especially prominent is the Green Chile Dust (30% Hatch Green Chile). The Chile Dust brings its own unique flavor and complex properties to the mix. I believe this ingredient is responsible for the overall flavor blast that is Crazy Mary. That, and Chef Jim O’Brien’s talents as a mixer of flavors, make Crazy Mary Bloody Mary mix the instant “hit” it has become. Fresh.

Heat Level: Rated 1.5 out of 5 Stars – 1.5 Stars – While Crazy Mary looks and smells very spicy, it’s actually fairly tame. Surprising, considering the amount of fresh horseradish in the mix. Add in the “chile pepper extract” component of the Worcestershire sauce used, and you would think this stuff would be super-hot. Just another nod to the genius of O’Brien – bringing on the flavor without overpowering heat. Nice heat.

Final thoughts: Rated 5 out of 5 Stars – 5 Stars – A superb mixer for bloody marys, Crazy Mary gets our best rating. Outstanding.

Ubons PitMaster’s Hot and Spicy Bloody Mary Mix

We last looked at Ubons BBQ Bloody Mary Mix back in March of 2013 where it placed 3rd among 5 mixers with ★★★☆☆.

This is their latest version called “Hot and Spicy”.

Since this is still the BBQ Month of May, what better bloody mary mix to review than one from Ubons? Ubons having won many championships on the BBQ circuit as Ubons of Yazoo, surely know their way around the bbq pit. And I’m sure many a bloody mary have been concocted at those camps.

Ingredients: Tomato puree (water, tomato paste), Worchestershire sauce (distilled white vinegar, molasses, water, sugar, onions, anchovies, salt, garlic, cloves, tamarind extract, natural flavorings, chile pepper extract), vinegar, sugar, molasses, salt, lemon juice, garlic, onion, ascorbic acid, spices.

Taste: Thick and full of mouth texture, with bits of garlic and spices. Bright, fresh tomato taste. Savory.

Texture and Appearance: Celery, black pepper and a little lemon in the background. The Worcestershire sauce blends in nicely as a supporting player… not so predominant. Fresh vegetable flavor.

Heat Level: There’s only just a tingle of heat that stays in my mouth after a good couple of sips. Only mildly spicy. Compared to the Original Ubons, this is just a tad above spicy. Perfect heat.

Final thoughts: Rated 5 out of 5 Stars – Our top rating of 5 stars! This Bloody Mary Mix is delicious, thick and savory.

As I write this, it’s St. Patrick’s Day weekend in the US, where everyone is Irish and everything is green, and our Sunday Bloody Mary post this week features a bright green mixer from Frankie V’s Kitchen of Dallas, Texas.

This uniquely different mixer includes green tomatoes, tomatillos, premium olive juice and Frankie V’s own Wasabi Green Thai Chile Hot Sauce.

Yea, this is a horse of a different color!

Let’s see what makes this Green Mary so green…

Ingredients: green tomatoes, tomatillos, celery, garlic, lime juice, 1888 Olive Juice, water, blue agave, FVK Wasabi Green Thai Chile Hot Sauce, worcestershire sauce, wasabi powder, white pepper, salt.

Texture & Appearance: Medium thin in consistency and bright green in color.

There are lots of bits in here – tiny tomatillo seeds, little bits of garlic and green tomato – very satisfying with a good amount of mouth-feel. Complex.

Taste Straight Up: This is a mixer unlike any I’ve ever had.

Straight up, Green Mary is very refreshing, tart and more than just a bit spicy – the unique green tomatoes and tomatillos bring a fresh acidic taste. Briny, salty olive juice hits you next, with the mild heat of wasabi bringing up the rear.

The inclusion of 1888 Olive Juice is a genius move on their part – designed for “dirty martinis”, 1888 Olive Juice (another Texas product) is a dirty martini mixer that adds a salty, briny flavor to this Green Mary drink. Unique and savory.

Heat Level: Rated 1.5 out of 5 Stars – 1.5/5 Stars.

Mild and tingly – the wasabi is there, and yes, Frankie V’s Wasabi Green Thai Chile Hot Sauce is a player here too, but it’s not a blow your head off heat. Mild in a good way.

Label/Graphics: Rated 5 out of 5 Stars – 5/5 on design, label, fonts and overall impression.

Bonus points for the green wax covered top that sports the “Frankie V’s Kitchen FVK” impression. Also, there’s the hanging tag and twine that are incorporated into the wax topping.

Like all of Frankie V’s products, the art department deserves kudos and accolades for another stellar design. Classy.

Final Thoughts

This very unique “bloody mary” mixer has to be one of the most unusual mixers I’ve ever come across.

It tastes fantastic all on it’s own, as a tomato cocktail, albeit a “green” one. It would make a great Michelada beverage with your favorite Cerveza.

Overall Rating: Rated 3 out of 5 Stars – 3/5 Stars for uniqueness. It just may be an acquired taste, but the more I drank it, the more I liked it.

This is certainly one of the most unusual products we’ve reviewed in a while – but delicious nonetheless.

Now, “Chili Dan” Miller is going to have my head on a platter for suggesting that this is a BBQ Bloody Mary Recipe. Chili Dan’s All Purpose Sauce is anything BUT a BBQ sauce… but we have to categorize this somehow… and so BBQ it is.

The beauty of this recipe, like all good recipes, is that you can make it your own! While we would love for you to get your hands on a couple of bottles of Chili Dan’s Sauce… you can substitute any other favorite BBQ sauce (sweeter is best here) and any spice blend you like for the glass rim. And while Blaze’s Pickled Green Beans is celebrating 20 years up in Vancouver, Canada… again, garnishes are up to you. BTW, Blaze’s Green Beans are easily ordered for shipping to the US on their website. Pas de problème.

Overview of the Chili Dan’s Bloody Mary Recipe

You’re going to pour a little bit of Chili Dan’s (or your favorite BBQ sauce) onto a dish to wet the rim of your glass.

You’re going to dredge the wet rimmed glass in Chili Dan’s Rim Topper seasoning (or your favorite seasonings).

Fill that glass with ice, and add 1 or 2 or 3 tablespoons of Chili Dan’s All Purpose Start to Finish Sauce (or your favorite BBQ sauce).

Add 1 or 2 or 3 ounces of your favorite adult beverage (Vodka in this case. Tequila if it’s Saturday Night. Whiskey if you live in Kentucky or Tennessee.)

Add the Blaze’s Beans and/or any garnishes you like. Chili Dan calls for a “floater” of 1/2 ounce juice (brine) from the pickled beans. I passed on that step.

Final Thoughts: Rated 5 out of 5 Stars – Refreshing. Probably the most enjoyable and refreshing Bloody Mary I’ve had in a long time. The overall sweet taste was a nice departure from the typical hot, spicy, horseradish-laden Bloody Mary mixers. NOT THAT THERE’S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT!

Our second in a series of Sunday Bloody Mary goodness comes from Powell and Mahoney Limited. Their “Super Spicy” Sriracha Bloody Mary mixer is all natural, gluten free, and is “handcrafted in Vermont”.

One of the newest flavors in the line-up of 12 mixers from Powell & Mahoney, Sriracha Bloody Mary packs quite a punch of spice and flavor. We reviewed Powell & Mahoney’s Original 1926 Recipe Bloody Mary mixer last year, and that one was pretty spicy all on its own – Sriracha Bloody Mary kicks the flavor and heat level up a few notches.

Based on the ingredient list, I’m guessing they are using a proprietary sriracha recipe that includes cayenne and red jalapeño peppers, but no garlic. So this is a different creature here, and not the usual “rooster sauce” in the plastic bottle.

Texture & Appearance: Rated 3.5 out of 5 Stars – Very thick and slightly pulpy with a bright red color. I love a thick bloody mary mixer like this one. After all, a bloody mary is practically breakfast, right? So the thicker, the better in my opinion.

Taste Straight Up: Rated 3 out of 5 Stars – An aroma of fresh crushed tomatoes is up front, hinting of homemade pasta sauce. But the first taste is all fresh tomato with a big hit of chile peppers and heat, with a nice, mild sweetness. After the chile pepper profile, the next biggest flavor to me is the dark, almost umami taste of the Worcestershire sauce. Almost exactly the same dark flavor component as their original Bloody Mary mixer.

I find this part of the overall flavor to be delicious! I love the all natural Worcestershire blend they use, and find it much more enjoyable than the usual Lea & Perrins style sauce.

The supporting players, or ingredients, don’t really stand out. The acids, mushrooms, allspice and clove, and even the garlic and horseradish are very muted.

Heat Level: Rated 2.5 out of 5 Stars – The heat blossoms in the back of my throat and makes my head sweat. It’s a pungent and sharp burn, but doesn’t last long, thus encouraging you to enjoy each sip. This is one of the hottest bloody mary mixers I’ve tried so far.

Label/Graphics: Rated 5 out of 5 Stars – Just as classy as all of their labels, this one includes an iconic red rooster in front of “Sriracha”.

Final Thoughts

You gotta love your Bloody Mary hot to enjoy this mixer. It doesn’t mess around.

And yet, as good as it stands on its own, you could certainly doctor it up with some additional horseradish or garlic, and lime or lemon juice for starters.

Murph’s Hot & Spicy Famous Bloody Mary Mix

We loved the original Murph’s Famous Bloody Mary Mix. That 5 Star mixer won the top spot in our Bloody Mary Mix Roundup.

Let’s look at Murph’s new Hot & Spicy version.

Ingredients:water, tomato paste, worcestershire (distilled vinegar, corn syrup, water, salt, garlic powder, spices, tamarind, natural flavor), lemon juice concentrate, horseradish, lime juice concentrate, salt, cayenne pepper sauce (cayenne pepper, vinegar, xanthan gum), celery salt, black pepper, garlic & onion.

Texture: Thick and pulpy. This mixer fills the mouth with a thick, savory flavor and a mouth full of taste. Very satisfying. Standing alone, as a non-alcoholic beverage, it’s delicious.

Taste: The cayenne hot sauce really shines here. Personally, I prefer more horseradish flavor, but the cayenne is a nice change. Many readers and fans of cayenne sauces will love this blend. Spicy is the key word here.

Much spicier than the Original. Therein lies the rub… as much as we like our hot sauces spicy, we prefer our BBQ sauces BBQ-y and our Bloody Mary Mixers – well, bloody. We like them tomato-y with nice spice blends. We would rather add our own horseradish and seasonings to kick things up.

Heat Level: Rated 1.5 out of 5 Stars – Just a notch above mildly spicy, Murph’s Hot & Spicy brings on some heat, but I wouldn’t call it “Hot”. That’s probably a good thing for the general public.

Final Thoughts: Cayenne pepper fans will love this mixer, but we prefer the original Murph’s Famous Bloody Mary Mix over this version.

Kudos to Murph for changing the packaging for both recipes to the nice wide mouth bottle. It’s still a full 1 Liter of mixer, in a better package.

Taste Straight Up: Fresh and fragrant – the celery and cucumber are really up front. This is a Bloody Mary mix from a pickle guy! Just slightly spicy, it’s nothing like you’ve ever had before. Refreshing.

Heat Level: Rated 1 out of 5 Stars – Mild, spicy and very approachable. Tantalizing.

Crazy Steve’s Shot Over the Rim Spicy Bloody Mary Salt

Shot Over the Rim Salt complements his Bloody Mary Mixers by providing a spicy, savory, salty mix to the rim of your glass. Packaged in a 6 ounce plastic tub.

Simply rub the rim of your cocktail glass with a lime wedge or dredge in lime juice and then dredge the the glass in the seasoning. A great companion to the Bloody Mary Mixer from Steve that really makes the drink complete.

Ingredients: salt, red wine vinegar powder, chile powder, jalapeño powder, onion powder, cider vinegar powder, cumin, garlic powder, sweet pepper powder, paprika, ground celery, cayenne pepper, ground black pepper, spices.

Texture & Appearance: Medium to small coarse ground seasoning. Colorful appearance. Nice addition to the cocktail and great alternative to the usual Old Bay seasoning.

Taste Straight Up: Salty, savory, spicy. A nice blend of chile powders and spices.

Heat Level: Rated 1 out of 5 Stars – Some spicy heat that complements the Bloody Mary Mix very well. Tame, yet adds some kick. A great pairing. Well done, Steve.

Crazy Steve’s Cajun Cukes

Rounding out this trio of a Crazy Steve’s Pickles Bloody Mary are his Cajun Cukes.

Here’s where we part ways. I’ve never been a fan of cukes in my Bloody Marys. And if I did add one, it would be a Kosher Spear style. Steve provided us with some Cajun Cukes sliced pickles.

Ingredients: cucumbers, water, red wine vinegar, cider vinegar, salt, jalapeño pepper, red onion, sweet peppers, celery, garlic, thyme, spices.

Texture, Appearance & Flavor: These sliced pickle chips are only slightly spicy, but they do have that “cajun” flavor – albeit a mild dose. And they are sliced pickles… in my mind, just a bit hard to “spear” and incorporate into the drink.

Final Thoughts

Overall: Rated 4 out of 5 Stars – Super cool and refreshing all on its own… straight up that is. Add your favorite adult beverage (vodka or tequila) and wow, this is not your Mama’s Bloody Mary! Paired with his Shot Over the Rim salt, pickles and olives and this is the Breakfast Drink of Kings. Ok, that’s a bit much, but it’s really scrumptious (yea, I just used that word) and makes for a most unusual but savory cocktail. Satisfying.

We first reviewed George’s Bloody Mary Mix (original flavor) in our Bloody Mary Mix Roundup. We deemed George’s at that time to be the most authentic “Maryland Style” mixer of the bunch, while it was also the hottest of the group of 5 mixers. George’s new Mild version is at the other end of the heat scale. Very mild, yet still retaining George’s signature authentic flavors and overall taste profile.

As much as we liked George’s Bloody Mary Mix original, it was too hot to be our everyday mixer. With the new Mild version, George’s has outdone itself. The Mild recipe is more of an everyday mixer. And who does’t drink Bloody Mary’s everyday? Well, you know what I mean.

Taste Straight Up: This is a delicious tomato cocktail beverage all on its own. A fresh tomato flavor with a good dose of worcestershire sauce is followed by just a hint of horseradish. Sweet and savory, it really is a great base for your Bloody Mary.

I mixed up 2 ounces of vodka with 6 ounces of George’s for my Bloody Mary this morning. It made a very tasty and satisfying drink. They’ve dialed back on the horseradish and hot sauce enough to make a milder version of their original. Perfect as is, or as an blank slate on which to build your own flavor profile into it. Either by adding more of your own horseradish, or even some other wilder ingredients such as steak sauce or BBQ sauce – or kick it up a bit with your own favorite hot sauce.

Ingredients: water, tomato puree, worcestershire sauce (vinegar, molasses, water, sugar, onions, anchovies, salt, garlic, cloves, tamarind extract, natural flavorings, chile pepper extract), lemon juice concentrate, horseradish (distilled vinegar, water, soybean oil, salt, sodium metabisulfate), hot sauce (peppers, vinegar, salt, xanthan gum, benzoate of soda), spices, celery salt.
