Dirty Dicks Hot Pepper Sauce is an exotic blend of habanero peppers, tropical fruits and sweetness, plus freshly ground spices from around the world.
Dirty Dicks Hot Pepper Sauce with a Tropical Twist
For all of you Caribbean style hot sauce lovers that relish a bright yellow hot sauce – perhaps with a mustard base and tons of exotic fruits – well this isn’t it! But, have we got a new Island Style hot sauce for you! Dirty Dicks Hot Pepper Sauce is not like any other Caribbean style sauce we’ve ever had. Yet it brings on the heat, fruit, sweet and spice of the Islands. This stuff is different!
We met Chef Richard Westhaver (aka Dirty Dick) himself at the NY Hot Sauce Expo. And while you may think that one guy with one sauce may be battling upstream for attention… make no mistake, this sauce is a true winner, and worthy of any Caribbean style sauce award or fan.
Speaking of awards, Dirty Dick’s has won numerous awards, including most recently a 1st Place 2013 NYC Hot Sauce Expo Screaming Mimi Award for Fruit Based Hot Sauce, as well as a 2013 Fiery Food Challenge Golden Chile Award for 1st Place Caribbean Hot Sauce. Okay, we’ve established this sauce is winning awards… let’s see what it tastes like.
Ingredients: habanero peppers, mangoes, pineapple, vinegar, bananas, tomatoes, brown sugar, sultanas [Thompson Seedless grapes], onions, garlic, salt & spices.
Texture & Appearance: – Not your typical yellow Caribbean appearance. This sauce is a dark red color, with a very crunchy meaty mouth feel. There is a lot to chew on as you enjoy this sauce. Bits of everything seem to be floating in this medium-thick sauce. I love the texture.
Taste Straight Up: – First up is a big hit of spices and seasonings – with cinnamon and allspice or nutmeg being the most prevelant. Next up is heat from the habaneros, then a mild sweetness finishing up. Almost the opposite of what we usually experience with Caribbean sauces. (Usually you get ALL heat, and maybe, if you’re lucky, some sweet).
There is also a slight “jerk style” flavor happening, due mainly to the combination of habanero chiles and spices. Which makes even more sense when you check out Dirty Dick’s recipe page. There you will find a jerk marinade that features Dirty Dicks Hot Pepper Sauce, as well as a recipe for an award winning BBQ sauce.
Heat Level: – Medium-hot. The heat fills the back of my mouth and down into the throat. Full bodied in its burn, yet flavor still trumps the heat here.
Label/Graphics: – The bright yellow label and red lettering really stand out. A memorable look and easy to read fonts make this a classic label. There is the issue of the mascot that is the centerpiece of Dirty Dick’s logo. Yup, that is a pig.
The pig was the mascot of Dirty Dick and the Legless Wonders – Chef Dick’s old BBQ competition team.
Overall Rating: – Our highest rating. Uniquely flavorful, with a perfect balance of sweet and heat and a spicy finish, brings this sauce up to the top. I can’t imagine not having a bottle of this sauce on hand at all times.
Dirty Dicks Hot Pepper Sauce is simply stellar in taste, mouth feel, and flavor.
